GORILLA Waterproofing Tape Held My Ice Rink Liner All Winter
I patched nicks in my backyard ice rink liner with GORILLA Waterproofing Tape, filled it, and it held water all season.
GORILLA Waterproofing Tape is worth buying if you need a permanent patch on something that sits in water. I taped nicks and holes in my backyard ice rink liner, filled the rink, and it held the water all season. Buy it, and keep the roll in the garage.

Quick Verdict
Holes in my rink liner, tape on, water in, hope for the best. It held the water beautifully and we skated the rest of the winter. For “will this seal what I’m putting it on,” the answer was an overwhelming yes.
Buy if you:
- Build a backyard ice rink and your liner came with nicks
- Need a patch that sits submerged, not just damp
- Have gutters, a roof seam, or a pool raft with a small hole
- Want one roll in the garage ready to go for years
Skip if you:
- Want a patch you can peel off later. The bond is permanent, so you’re committing the surface
- Need to cover a wide tear. The roll is 4 inches across, so big splits take overlapping strips
- Only want white. That’s the color on this one
| Width | 4 in |
|---|---|
| Color | White, UV resistant backing |
| Bond | Permanent seal against air, water, moisture |
| Use | Indoor and outdoor, applies even under water |
| Surfaces | Roofs, rubber, plastic, vinyl pool liners |
The Liner Came Out of the Box With Holes
The rink liner came out of the box with nicks and holes in it before a drop of water went in. That’s the worst timing possible, because the only move after that is patch it or lose the season. I had the GORILLA Waterproofing Tape on Amazon in the garage, so I put it on there, filled it up, and hoped for the best.
I didn’t think to take a picture when I applied it, which is unfortunate. I do have pictures of the rink filled. And it held the water beautifully.
What It Won’t Do
Permanent means permanent. Gorilla lists this as a permanent bond, so this isn’t the tape for something you plan to unstick and reuse later. Go in knowing the surface is committed.
The other limit is width. Four inches covers a nick, a puncture, a seam. A long tear means overlapping runs, and I’d rather overlap generously than trust one thin strip under a few thousand gallons.
Waterproofing Tape for Roof, Gutters, and Anything Going in Water
The patches held through a full winter submerged under water and freezing temperatures without leaking. The rink sat under water and froze, and the patches never gave up water. That’s the whole reason I’d reach for this as a waterproofing tape for roof seams or gutter joints too, since those are the same job with less pressure on them.
The UV-resistant backing is what pushes it beyond a one-job tape, a gutter patch or a raft repair that lives in the sun all summer needs something that won’t yellow and peel by August. Gorilla says it won’t, and based on what it held up to on the rink, I believe them.
One note on buying it: Amazon currently ranks it #119 in Industrial & Scientific against a 90 day average near #1,099, with more than 3,000 bought in the past month. The price on this one swings, and it’s been well under its usual level before, so check the live price on Amazon rather than assuming.
Storage Is the Whole Maintenance Plan
There’s nothing to maintain, and that’s the point. I keep the roll in my garage, cap on, done, and it’ll be ready the next time a liner, gutter, or pool float needs a patch. One roll at this price covers more repairs than most people will ever throw at it.
Would I Buy Another Roll? Yes.
For me, a punctured liner stayed watertight through four months of winter under several thousand gallons of water and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. That’s not a controlled lab test, it’s the real one, and the tape passed it cleanly. If it can do that, patching a gutter seam or a pool float is not even a question.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you apply it while the surface is already wet?
Yes. Gorilla lists this one as working indoor and out, rain or shine, or even under water. That matters if you’ve already filled something and found the leak after the fact.
Will the white tape yellow in the sun?
It’s not supposed to. The backing is built to take moisture and UV rays without yellowing, which is the point of using it on a roof or a gutter instead of something generic.
How do I cut it cleanly?
Use scissors or a utility knife. It’s 4 inches wide and thick, so tearing it by hand gives you ragged edges, and ragged edges on a patch that has to hold water are not what you want.
