FOTING 1/2HP Submersible Water Pump Review: Quiet and Portable
I used the FOTING 1/2HP submersible water pump to drain my melted backyard hockey rink. Light, quiet, and surprisingly fast.
The FOTING 1/2HP submersible water pump is worth buying if you need to move a pump around and drain standing water down to almost nothing. At 8.5 lbs with a carry handle and a 0.04-inch minimum suction level, it emptied my backyard rink pool quietly enough to run all day. Buy it.

Quick Verdict
The cars driving past my house were louder than this pump running. I had it draining my melted backyard rink all day and nobody in my family or next door noticed. For something that weighs 8.5 lbs, I’m really pleased with how powerful it is.
Buy if you:
- Need to carry a pump between a pool, a rink, and a basement
- Want standing water pulled down to almost nothing, not just the deep part
- Already own a garden hose and want to just screw it on and go
- Can’t have a pump droning all day next to the neighbors
Skip if you:
- Need it to run on uneven ground, it has to sit flat on the surface to pull water underneath it
- Want a permanently installed basement sump with a float switch
- Are pumping water with chunks bigger than 1/5 inch in it

I Built a Rink. Then It Melted.
I built a hockey rink in my backyard over the winter, and when it got warm and melted, I faced a shallow pool of standing water that had to go somewhere. All the ice melted, and I was left with a shallow pool of water sitting in my yard that had to go somewhere. That’s why the FOTING submersible water pump came out of the box. You can see it on Amazon if you want the current pricing, but what mattered to me was whether a pump this small could handle a job this dumb.
At 8.5 lbs, it’s lighter than a gallon jug of water times two, and the carry handle is molded directly into the housing, not a strap, not an afterthought. The specs are laser-printed on the back of the housing, so I didn’t have to dig up the manual to remember the max head or the minimum suction depth.
Where a Small Submersible Water Pump Fits
This pump is portable and temporary, not a permanent basement install with a float switch. A permanent basement sump pump sits in a pit with a float switch and never moves. This one is the opposite: 8.5 lbs, a handle, a 10-foot cord, and three adapters so it mates to whatever hose you already own. There’s a GHT 3/4-inch adapter for a garden hose, an NPT elbow, and a multi-hose adapter for 1-inch, 1-1/2-inch, and NPT 1-inch lines.
One thing worth knowing before you buy: it’s selling a little slower than it was. It currently sits at #16,888 in Tools & Home Improvement against a 90-day average around #14,823, and Amazon still shows more than 500 bought in the past month. Pricing has been flat for three months, so there’s no reason to sit around waiting on a drop.
The Flat Base Is the Whole Trick
All you have to do is make sure you put it flat on the surface of whatever you’re trying to empty. The stainless base sits down on the bottom and the hollow underside lets water flow underneath it, then the impeller sucks the water up and straight into the hose you screwed on. That’s how it gets down to 0.04 inch of remaining depth. There’s no pickup tube to leave an inch of water behind.
The filter on that base is removable and rated for solids up to 1/5 inch. Setup was two steps. You literally just plug a hose in and then plug it in. No priming, no switch to hunt for, no app, no account, nothing to configure.
Quieter Than the Cars Going By
It’s not that loud. When I stopped talking and just let the mic listen, the cars driving by in the background were louder than the pump itself. That’s the detail that changed how I used it, because it meant I could leave the thing running all day emptying the pool without it bothering my neighbors or my family.
Speed surprised me more than the noise did. The listing claims 2450 GPH and 25 feet of lift, and while I wasn’t running a stopwatch on a measured tank, the rink pool, roughly 20 by 40 feet of shallow standing water, was gone before dinner. I dropped it in, walked away, and never touched it again until the base was sitting on wet grass.
If you’re hunting for a submersible water pump for a pool, a pond, or a boat, that combination of quiet and quick is the part that actually decides it. Most of these jobs aren’t a 20-minute sprint. They’re an afternoon. Check today’s price on Amazon if that’s your situation.
What Bugged Me
It has to sit flat, and that’s a real constraint. On a sloped or lumpy surface the base can’t pull water underneath it properly, so the 0.04-inch claim depends entirely on you finding a level spot. In my pool that was easy. In a cracked basement floor or a rutted yard it wouldn’t be.
The cord is also 10 feet, which means an extension cord is coming out of the garage for most outdoor jobs. And with no float switch, this thing runs until you unplug it. That’s fine when you’re home. It’s not a set-it-and-leave-town pump.
Would I Buy It Again
Yes, without hesitation. The rink job is done, and this pump is already queued up for the basement and the boat. Three adapters, a 10-foot cord, and a flat stainless base that pulls water to 0.04 inches, there’s nothing else at this weight that does all three. FOTING backs it with three years of after-sales service, which is longer than most utility pumps in this class bother to offer.
Pros
- 8.5 lbs with a molded carry handle, easy to move between jobs
- Quieter than the traffic on my street, fine to run all day
- Pulls water down to 0.04 inch thanks to the flat stainless base
- Setup is plug a hose in, plug it in, done
- Three adapters cover garden hose and 1-inch to 1-1/2-inch lines
Cons
- Has to sit flat or the under-base suction doesn’t work right
- No float switch, so it runs until you unplug it
- 10-foot cord means an extension cord for most yard work
- Solids limited to 1/5 inch
Frequently Asked Questions
Does it need an app, account, or any setup software?
No. It’s a plug-in pump with no electronics to configure, no app, and no subscription. You attach a hose, plug it into an outlet, and it runs.
What’s the warranty situation?
FOTING lists three years of after-sales service and says every unit is factory tested. They also advertise support availability around the clock if something goes wrong.
Will it work as a submersible water pump for a well?
Not really. The max head is 25 feet and it’s built as a portable utility pump for puddles, pools, ponds, boats, and flooded floors. A deep well needs a dedicated well pump with far more lift.
How do I clean it after draining dirty water?
The stainless filter on the base is removable, so pull it and rinse the debris off. The housing is thermoplastic and corrosion resistant, so a flush with clean water before storage is enough.
